Our mission is to keep your vision clear

What Is Ocular Surface Disease?

Ocular Surface Disease (OSD) is a broad term that refers to chronic conditions affecting the cornea, conjunctiva, eyelids, meibomian glands, and tear film, the structures that keep the front surface of the eye healthy and comfortable. The most common form of OSD is dry eye disease, but it also includes:

🔸 Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)

🔸 Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)

🔸 Allergic conjunctivitis

🔸 Exposure related irritation

🔸 Autoimmune related eye surface conditions (e.g., Sjögren’s syndrome, Thyroid eye disease, Hashimoto’s)

Patients with OSD often experience dryness, burning, redness, gritty sensation, blurred vision, tearing, and discomfort with screen use, contact lenses, or wind exposure.

What Causes Ocular Surface Disease?

🔸 Inflammation of the tear glands or eyelids

🔸 Blocked oil glands (MGD)

🔸 Poor tear production

🔸 Environmental factors

🔸 Autoimmune conditions

🔸 Demodex mites or bacterial overgrowth on the eyelid margins

🔸 Surgical or contact lens complications
