Diabetic Eye Exams

Protecting Your Vision from Diabetes-Related Damage

If you have diabetes, regular comprehensive eye exams are essential—even if your vision feels fine. High blood sugar levels can quietly damage the delicate blood vessels in your eyes, leading to permanent vision loss if not caught early.

Why Diabetic Eye Exams Matter:

Diabetes increases your risk for several serious eye conditions, including:

🔸 Diabetic Retinopathy: damage to the retina’s blood vessels, often without early symptoms

🔸 Diabetic Macular Edema (DME): swelling in the part of the retina responsible for sharp vision

🔸 Glaucoma: increased eye pressure that can damage the optic nerve

🔸 Cataracts: clouding of the lens, which occurs earlier and more often in people with diabetes

How Often Should You Get a Diabetic Eye Exam?

🔸 Type 1 Diabetes: Get a comprehensive eye exam within 5 years of diagnosis, then yearly

🔸 Type 2 Diabetes: Start annual eye exams at the time of diagnosis

More frequent exams may be needed if you’re pregnant, experiencing vision changes, or have signs of diabetic eye disease.

What to Expect During Your Exam:

At our clinic, diabetic eye exams include advanced diagnostic tests to detect early signs of eye disease, even before symptoms appear:

🔸 Dilated Retinal Exam: Eye drops widen your pupils to allow a better view of the retina and optic nerve

🔸 Retinal Photography or Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): High-resolution images that help detect early damage or swelling in the retina

🔸 Visual Acuity Testing: Measures how well you see at different distances

🔸 Tonometry: Measures eye pressure to screen for glaucoma

🔸 Fluorescein Angiography (if needed): A special dye test to assess blood flow in the retina

Early Detection = Vision Protection

Most diabetic eye diseases are treatable when caught early, but they can lead to irreversible vision loss if ignored. Regular eye exams are your best defense.
